MINING STORIES is a documentary performance that deals with a mining disaster in Silke Huysmans’ hometown region Minas Gerais in Brazil. On November 5, 2015 a dam there meant to hold back the toxic waste from the work being done in a mine burst and unleashed a toxic mud avalanche that destroyed several villages. In a region where more than three quarters of the inhabitants work in the mining industry, Silke Huysmans and Hannes Dereere spoke with the people who are affected by this catastrophe, and in this way they attempted to gain access to its consequences. MINING STORIES is augmented by economic and medical statements. Every one of these voices has a special point of interest and tells a different story about the catastrophe, placing it in a different correlation. Thus in the space between these perspectives an image develops of how memory, politics, and storytelling are interwoven, but also how local events can be placed in a global context.
