A year after his father’s death, the author and director Boris Nikitin starts writing down the story of his father’s motor neurone disease. The illness makes quick work of people: the time it takes from diagnosis to death is just under a year. Very early on, Nikitin’s father made it known that he was considering assisted suicide. A declaration which changed many things. In the performance VERSUCH ÜBER DAS STERBEN (ATTEMPT ON DYING), Nikitin combines the story of this outing with the story of his own coming-out as a gay man 20 years ago. In so doing, he creates an evening of theatre focused on stepping into the public gaze, breaking social taboos, and the vulnerability that arises when people begin to make themselves seen and heard. VERSUCH ÜBER DAS STERBEN is a play about the gaze of others, overcoming inhibitions, and the utopia of a vulnerability that is by no means a deficiency in humanity but rather a revolutionary capacity.

Biography

The director, author, essayist and programme maker Boris Nikitin, born in Basel to Ukrainian-Slovakian-French-Jewish immigrants, stages plays on the international independent scene and at German-language municipal theatres. Nikitin’s theatre works, texts and festivals explore the representation and production of identity and reality. His works straddle the boundary between theatre of illusion and performance, between document and its falsification, and seek out those zones of ambiguity and potential in which individuality and empowerment can be reconceived.
