Several kilogrammes of war debris are the raw material in Julian Hetzel’s performance ALL INCLUSIVE. They come from Syria and are the products of a conflict that for eight years has shaped the political reality and its media perception like no other. In ALL INCLUSIVE the audience watches a group of refugees on a guided tour with an art mediator whose job it is to familiarise them with the western canon. In the fictitious museum situation, the group is confronted with war debris which, in this context, is presented as exhibits. Julian Hetzel is challenging the aestheticisation of violence. If sculptures can be created from bomb debris, and if a verbal speech reporting the number of war dead can be transformed into notes and music by a synthesiser, what is the relationship between the horror and artistic beauty and its production? In all questions, Julian Hetzel incorporates the concrete reality of refugees. They do not have the luxury of apprehending an aerial bomb in purely aesthetic categories.
Julian Hetzel presented THE INDUSTRY OF WAITING at SPIELART in 2013 and SCULPTING FEAR in 2015.
