The Swiss artist and story collector Mats Staub explores how world history is reflected through personal memories. For the video installation 21 – ERINNERUNGEN ANS ERWACHSENWERDEN (21 – MEMORIES OF COMING OF AGE) he asks people from different countries the question: “What did you do at the age of 21?” He stops off at, among other places, Bern and Belgrade, Vienna and Weimar, Kinshasa and Johannesburg. He visits the protagonists again after three months: while playing them the compacted audio recordings, he films the reactions on their faces. These range from smiling, to crying, to gestures of pride, through to visible contemplation. As an ever-expanding video installation, 21 portrays the narrators as listening to their own memory. The viewers are confronted with Mats Staub’s portraits of these individuals on monitors in the freely accessible exhibition space. When considered together, unexpected overlaps emerge, and an extraordinary perspective on the past and present century.
Mats Staub will be recording more Memories in Munich. For more information send an email to email@example.com.
